It is a well-known fact that exercise promotes good health and it should be performed regularly. However, an article from the British Medical Journal suggests that too much exercise may be bad for you.

In the article, American cardiologists James O’Keefe and Carl Lavie, who are avid runners, advise exercise enthusiasts to limit their exercises to 30 to 50 minutes per day. The doctors also warn that running marathons and joining Ironman events should only be done occasionally.

Too much exercise can sometimes even lead to death because, according to the studies analyzed by the researchers, intense exercise can overwork and damage the heart. The cardiac tissues are torn, stretched, and scratched, raising the odds of dangerous changes in the heart’s rhythm and effectively shortening a person’s lifespan.

There is also another study which showed that although runners and marathoners are more likely to have longer lives, only those who ran moderately, around 5 to 20 miles per week, benefited from running. In fact, slow joggers were more likely to benefit from running than long distance runners — slow jogging increases life expectancy, a fact that proves that the unique effects of exercise can be best obtained through moderate exercise.

These studies only show that even exercise should be done, as with all things in life, in moderation.
