Bone appetit: Food for stronger bones

January 22, 2013

The skeletal system is one of the most important parts of the human body. It gives you form, allows you to walk and stand upright, and protects your vital organs. Bones are alive; they grow and change their shape throughout your lifespan. Without proper care, bones can become brittle and prone to breakage.

One of the best ways to take care of your bones is to eat foods rich in bone-strengthening vitamins and minerals, such as calcium, potassium, and sodium, which your bones are made out of.

Here are some types of food that, when eaten, can strengthen and nourish your bones:

• Milk, cereals, soy, and yogurt are very high in calcium and are recommended especially to people with osteoporosis, a disease that makes the bones porous and more prone to fractures. For the lactose-intolerant, lactose-free dairy products usually contain the same amount of calcium as the normal ones.

• Nuts and seeds are packed not only with calcium but also with vitamin D, which is needed for the optimum calcium absorption of the body.

• Canned fish is also good for your bones, especially since fish bones are jam-packed with calcium.

Eating vitamin D-rich foods are also important because vitamin D plays a big part in the calcium absorption of the body. Normally, you get your daily dose of vitamin D from sunlight; however, as you get older, your skin becomes less effective at absorbing vitamin D from the sun, necessitating the intake of vitamin D supplements or vitamin D-rich foods.
