Hip happy: Learning about hip replacement surgery

January 24, 2013

Almost everyone who has had hip replacement surgery in the past 10 to 20 years agrees that it is the best thing that has ever happened to him or her. But what exactly is hip replacement surgery, and why do people need it?

Hip joint damage occurs when the cartilage protecting the hip bone joints gets worn away due to heavy activity over time, exposing the joints to increased friction, which causes pain. Normally, lifestyle modification, exercise, and painkillers are enough to stave off the pain, but if the pain becomes too much to bear, a hip replacement surgery might be needed. This procedure involves replacing the top of the femur with a metal ball and resurfacing the hip socket with metal.

The first few weeks after surgery will be the hardest, as weight cannot be put on the hip for about six months, necessitating the need for a crutch, walker, or cane. In some cases, the doctor will also require the patient to visit a physical therapist, who will then instruct the patient on how to exercise and do everyday activities, like washing, dressing, and cooking, while the hip heals.

Depending on the type of surgery, some patients could go home after a few days. At home, monitoring of the treated area for any redness or swelling is imperative.  Most doctors also advise the patients to perform specific exercises that will aid in the acceleration of the healing process.

With medical technology advancing year after year, surgical procedures, including hip replacement surgery, will only get better over time, changing and improving the quality of human life.
