I’ve had mine for just a few days and find it a significant tool for a host of clinical applications–for just about anyone. Granted, there are FDA restrictions for now, I still believe that digital health has taken a bold step forward and landed in the arena of clinical medicine. Digital health is now moving away from “digital fitness” and taking a foot hold in practice. The applications are vast and significant.

The Physician: From hands-on “distal”applications virtually anywhere to “proximal” ECG readings provided via email, the ability for a healthcare providers to be connected is simply amazing. I wonder what Normal Holter (of Holter monitor fame) would think. The rhythm strip is the first step and how far off will a 12 lead ECG be?

The Patient: While asymtomatic arrhythmias remain an issue, symptomatic patients can record and transmit ECG tracings with the ease and speed of posting a photo on Facebook. It’s really that simple and intuitive. Even simple ECG feedback for stress reduction is an added opportunity for use.

The First Responder: I know many active and engaged certified responders who make a significant difference in their communities. Their ability (recognizing the current FDA restrictions) to assess and more effectively respond can be enhanced. This technology, parterned with future innovations in emergency response begins to paint the future role of digital health in the community setting.

The Financial Community: Every innovation needs a “home run” to showcase the success. And here’s a wake up call for investors that need to jump on the band wagon of digital health. It’s not a simple jump. But an informed step that embraces success and drives innovation.

Nice job AliveCor. Soon, we will all look back and wonder how we could live without our smart phone ECG. But by then, these early devices will remind us of the ”brick” size cell phones of just a few short years ago. And then, what an amazing (and healthy) world it will be…
