Diarrhea kills: Preventing diarrhea and dehydration

April 23, 2013

A common disease, diarrhea is usually downplayed by most people; most of them often see it as more of an inconvenience rather than an illness. Little do they know that regardless of how common it is, diarrhea can be deadly. For instance, it caused 2.5 million deaths in the U.S. in 1996.

How can diarrhea cause death?

A person experiencing diarrhea defecates very frequently, and this excessive digestive flushing can result in severe dehydration. The body needs the proper amount of water to counterbalance the toxins that are created during its normal operation. Without the proper amount of water, these toxins can undermine the body’s ability to flush out metabolic waste products. In addition, for proper energy production and cellular nourishment, human cells need to have the right amount of osmotic pressure, which is used to counteract osmosis. When a person is dehydrated, the amount of osmotic pressure is not fulfilled, which may lead to cell damage.

How does one prevent diarrhea and dehydration?

Diarrhea can be prevented by proper nutrition and avoiding unhealthy foods, like processed or fatty meat, alcohol, and diet beverages. As fiber is important for regular bowel movement and stool consistency, eating food rich in fiber is helpful in avoiding diarrhea. However, since there is no sure-fire way to prevent diarrhea from occurring, taking beverages with electrolytes, like Gatorade and Powerade, or oral rehydration salts can go a long way in preventing dehydration, as these products effectively replenish lost water and nutrients flushed out by the body during defecation.

Diarrhea may be a common disease, but it is not wise to disregard the danger it poses to everyone, especially to children.
