Despite all the efforts of the US government concerning health care legislation, medical costs in the country continue to rise. Because of this, many insurance companies encourage their patients to choose medical travel instead. Through the years, medical travel patients have been trying to avoid an increase in their premiums as they seek not only simple cosmetic procedures but also complicated ones, such as coronary artery bypass graft, ankle fusion, and gastric bypass operation. This article by Caroline Eden explains that the medical travel trend in Thailand has been lucrative. The country is one of the most popular places in the world for medical travel, which attracted an estimated 500,000 tourists specifically for medical treatment in 2011. And with its reputation for hospitable and personalized service, Thailand has become the heart of medical travel in Asia. Top-of-the-line hospitals in Thailand include Bumrungrad, Bangkok Hospital, and Phyathai Hospitals Group.

Colombia

BBC’s Lonely Planet lists Colombia as one of the hot spots for offshore medical treatment, where people from North America and other countries go to for healthcare services. Its cities, including Bogota, have ranging services, from dentistry to heart surgeries, which cost one-fifth less than that of US hospitals. Many Colombian doctors are experts in their respective fields and were highly trained abroad.
